Occitan poetry 980-2008 by Joan-Frederic Brun

I give here the text and the translation of the first version of this amazing text. More than 30 years later, a fully different version appeared in book (see above). Apparently the famous poet has modified his Praise to the rose over the half part of his life. The final version contains only 3 or 4 verses of this initial poem of the early seventies...

Born in 1923 in the magic country of the Landes, where legends appear
between the sand and the haze. Surely a giant of European literature of
the XXth Century. Was first a diplomat who lived the end of the IInd World
War and elaborated a very powerful poetry inspired by this tremendous fall
of kingdoms ans civilizations. Since 1976, became redactor in chief of Oc,
the most famous Occitan literary journal, and there exerted a huge
influence over all the evolution of modern Occitan literature during a
third of a century. He was obsessed by the need to always improve the
standard of Occitan literature and transmitted this will to many. Manciet's poetry is without peer, it gushes from the deepests springs of
idiomatic Occitan of the Landes, despite continuous references to the
universal literature (Greek, Latin, German, South American, etc...) and a
continuous burning of metaphysical interrogations. It seems almost impossible to translate Manciet's literature. I tried
however here below and I apologize in advance for the obvious infidelity
of this translation that should however give some idea of the richness and
the complexity of his poems. Surely this "Laus de l'Arròsa",
already noted by René Nelli, is one of the most fascinating texts of this
poet (among a huge number of others). What does the author describe under
that name of "rose"? I guess the reader, looking at the
comparisons, will have some idea. |

Rose, the desire of rose all indwelled Impatient rose if you trust tree of tears tongue of dazzling grapes all desire and freckles there's only rising suns the mustered gushers are dissociating from each other - tree of springs - all structure and overflow and soft fraud where hair resolves itself into language reddish rose where all fires picked if sunset deducts and rolls up itself the crimson a shadow of highness oh! Labial armies, exchange rose juice for your emptiness evil summer of fires turned night - the licking.
